The Bay Minette Police Department arrested 54-years-old LARRY VERGOS LOGAN JR (pictured) on ten counts of animal cruelty.

On Monday, November 20, 2023, officers went to LOGAN’s home on Pecan Street to serve a felony arrest warrant unrelated to what they then discovered inside the property.

Bay Minette Police Chief Al Tolbert told WKRG the conditions inside the home were “deplorable.”

Officers found trash and dog feces throughout the home but most of all, officers found three deceased puppies. Chief Tolbert said they were probably between 6 and 8 weeks old.

Outside the residence were five adult dogs who were being kept in inhumane condition. The poor souls were chained, starving, and visibly uncared for. Chief Tolbert said: “They did have injuries that I believe would be consistent with fighting, dog fighting.”

He then added: “They don’t ask to be put in that environment. And they can’t fend for themselves when you chain them and tether them to trees and stumps and whatever.”

In addition to the animal cruelty charges, LOGAN faces drug charges. Officers also found high-grade marijuana in mason jars. To this regard, Chief Tolbert said: “It would be more than personal use and the way it was packaged.”

All of the Voiceless Victims, including two puppies, are being examined by veterinarians.

Arrest records show that LOGAN was arrested on Monday evening and released less than an hour later. Online arrest records maintained by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office show that LOGAN has a long criminal history and this arrest is the 4th one this year! LOGAN will be in court in January to answer the animal cruelty charges.

On Monday, October 23, 2023, 43-years-old EARL ANTRON HAMILTON (pictured), accused of forcing dogs to fight until they died, presented an Alford guilty plea for those criminal charges.

HAMILTON pleaded guilty to:

Twelve felony counts of animal cruelty.

Twelve misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Five felony counts of dogfighting.

Three misdemeanor counts of cruel restrain.

The charges refer to HAMILTON’s involvement in a despicable dogfighting case that dates back to 2021.

According to the incident report obtained by Voice For Us, on the afternoon of October 24, 2021, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received a request for assistance from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control at a property in the 4300 block of Leopold Place, Buckleigh Neighborhood.

Animal Control was responding to the residence about an injured dog and since HAMILTON was known to be aggressive and had a “Domestic Violence protection order against him”, the agency requested help from the police.

Police determined there was justification to obtain a search warrant which then led to a total of twenty-nine (29) dogs being removed from the property.

Sadly, two of the dogs died due to medical issues and one was euthanized due to health complications.

The twenty-six (26) surviving dogs are currently in the care of CMPD Animal Care & Control getting medical and day-today care. Officials with animal control will make decisions on whether they can be placed for adoption or if they have to be euthanized.

A court date for HAMILTON has not been set.

HAMILTON is not allowed to own or have possession of any dogs for only five years; however, his wife is allowed to keep her two miniature Schnauzers.

On a separate note, WCNC reports, “A 2014 report from NBC affiliate WRAL shows Hamilton has previously made headlines in other parts of North Carolina for animal abuse charges. The report noted at least two other instances of animal cruelty accusations, in 2010 and in 2014.”

Following an ongoing investigation, on the morning of Friday, September 1, 2023, Autauga County officials uncovered a dogfighting operation in Plantersville. The Autauga County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in this case and more people could be charged.

Deputies arrested 44-years-old CLIFFORD EUGENE SHEPPARD (pictured).

Together with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office, Autauga County Sheriff’s deputies found a total of thirty-five (35) dogs on the property as well as the remains of other dogs and animals.

Sonya King, Director/Founder of Two by Two Animal Rescue, told WSFA: “The most disturbing image I saw was a deer that had been chained. My theory is that he was used, you know, um for hungry dogs to eat while he was alive.”

According to court documents, SHEPPARD subjected the animals to “cruel mistreatment,” including putting heavy chains around their necks.

Court documents obtained by Voice For Us state that SHEPPARD is charged with twenty-seven counts of aggravated animal cruelty, eight counts of animal cruelty, a separate count of dogfighting, and altered firearms. Arrest records show that SHEPPARD is being held in the Autauga County Jail on a $483,000 bond.

Two by Two Animal Rescue took in the dogs and as you can imagine the shelter needs help to face this new challenge. If you wish and can afford to make a donation, please click here. Thank you!

On Two by Two Animal Rescue’s Facebook page I found a few reels showing the rescue of the Voiceless Victims. It’s truly emotional when Sonya removes the damn chains and repeatedly tells the furbabies: “It’s over today!” I shared still images from the reels and pictures published by Two by Two Animal Rescue. This world needs people like Sonya, NOT trash like SHEPPARD!

I loathe individuals who make a living by using innocent and defenseless animals to fight. They are too lazy and ignorant to get a decent job and make an honest living. Those who attend these barbaric and illegal activities are NO better than the organizers. YOU ALL ARE TRASH!

CLIFFORD EUGENE SHEPPARD, you like fights? Why don’t you get in the ring and fight your friends and relatives? Why don’t you put chains around their necks and let them tell you how much they like it! Leave animals alone and get a job!!!!
