The Louisville Metro Police Department arrested 23-years-old RYAN CARBY pictured.

The incidents that ultimately led to his arrest date back to June 2022.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by Voice For Us, Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) received a complaint about the potential abandonment of a dog and numerous cats inside a property on 954 Goss Avenue.

Sgt. Sabatini was able to speak to a family member who stated that the animals were not abandoned.

On June 24, 2022, LMAS received another complaint involving the same residence. The complainant reported again the possible abandonment of animals inside the home.

Sgt. Michael McMichael made contact with CARBY who said that the animals were his aunt’s, and that she had passed away two weeks prior. CARBY added that he and his brother, BRYAN CARBY, “were taking responsibility for the cats at the residence”, stated the complaint.

The complaint identified BRYAN CARBY as the co-defendant in this case.

On June 29, 2022, Officer Matthew McKechnie responded to the residence in question to conduct a welfare check on the cats. According to the complaint, “A deceased cat could be seen through the window of one of the bedrooms.”

As Officer McKechnie was walking through the home, CARBY arrived on the scene and Officer McKechnie noticed that the deceased cat he saw through the window had been removed.

Additionally, Officer McKechnie noticed that another deceased cat had also been removed from another area of the residence. Officer McKechnie and Officer Goodman reported that they witnessed CARBY “walking back to the residence, carrying the two deceased cats, wrapped in cloths.”

Officers also found a cat, identified as Jasmine in the complaint, who was very thin, had severe hair loss, and a flea infestation. According to the complaint, Jasmine was supposed to be in the direct care of the CARBY brothers after their aunt died.

LMAS took custody of Jasmine.

Throughout the residence, three severely decomposed bodies of cats were discovered in addition to the two ones that CARBY attempted to hide. The bodies of those two cats, who had been deceased for three to eighteen months, were sent to the University of Kentucky for necropsy.

In the criminal complaint, LMAS Lt. Adam Hamilton stated that the CARBY brothers failed to provide a clean-living environment, food, water, or vet care to a cat.

The animal cruelty charges that RYAN CARBY is facing refer to the cat who was left deceased on the windowsill.

It’s unclear whether additional charges are pending. Furthermore, the complaint does not mention any dogs found in the property. I have emailed LMAS to inquire about that and if I receive a response, I will post an update.

RYAN CARBY was arraigned on Friday, October 13, 2023. Online arrest records show he is no longer in custody.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office announced that two male subjects have been arrested in connection with the torture inflicted on a defenseless cat that was filmed and posted to social media.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said that on the morning of Friday, August 18, 2023, the department received a call alerting them to the incident. Deputies Jesse Smith and Lt. Sam Mullins were able to identify one of the two individuals, 20-years-old GABRIEL MESSER (pictured), based on his tattoos. MESSER was already behind bars as he had been arrested earlier that week on criminal abuse of a juvenile charges.

Deputy Smith and Lt. Mullins then questioned MESSER at the Knox County Detention Center and he told them that he had stabbed the cat but it was the idea of the other party.

The sheriff’s office did not release the identity of the second individual in the case because he is a juvenile.

According to the release, MESSER claimed “he was going to kill the cat and wanted toput it out of [its] misery’.”

After interviewing MESSER, Deputy Smith and Lt. Mullins went to the juvenile’s residence to question him about the incident and he placed the blame on MESSER.

The investigation into this disturbing case determined that the juvenile was the individual filming the sickening act and laughing in the video. He was arrested and transported to the Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Center. He is charged with torture of a dog or cat and criminal mischief first degree.

The charges against MESSER in relation to this case are animal cruelty and criminal mischief.

MESSER is being held on a $5,500 cash bond.

The sheriff’s office said that the cat’s guardian confirmed the cat seen in the video was hers and added that she had other animals, including a dog who was found stabbed in a similar manner behind her home in a creek.

The sheriffs’ office said that additional charges are pending.

I have emailed the Knox County Sheriff’s Office to inquire about both furvictims and in an email I was told: “Since this case is an ongoing investigation, we only released the arrest information in the press release at this time.”

Always Faithful Animal Rescue, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit rescue, has been charged with ninety-one (91) counts of second-degree animal cruelty, thirty-one (31) counts of not licensing dogs with the county, and thirty-four (34) counts of animals not being vaccinated against rabies.

Following complaints made about the rescue, Hardin County Animal Care and Control officer Chris Silas responded to the facility on Hawkins Drive, on July 22, 2023.

Mike McNutt, Animal Care & Control Director, told WAVE the animals “were living in neglect and just wasn’t up to code.” He added: “You know it needs to be clean, food and water and clean cages.”

Mr. McNutt also explained to The New-Enterprise: “The animals were living in a neglectful situation, not up to code, but no life-threatening issues. There was no reason for us to go in and seize the animals. We are working with the county attorney to get everything up to code.”

Three people associated with the rescue are now facing charges: 46-years-old AMY MARIE SMITH (pictured), 55-years-old KEVIN EUGENE SMITH, and 28-years-old JESSICA RENAE WAGNER (also pictured).

According to Always Faithful Animal Rescue’s website, AMY SMITH is listed as the president and WAGNER as adopter, volunteer, and foster parent.

AMY MARIE SMITH spoke with The News-Enterprise and said that the charges are unfounded and will be dropped. She told the news agency that she offered to show ACO Silas the animals’ vaccination records and claimed “He didn’t check. That’s the thing. He never checked for vaccinations. He just said you can bring them to court. The thing is he never asked me. … So he’s charging me with something he never checked.” SMITH went on to say that ACO Silas is “out to get us” and has attacked the rescue “online for years”.

With regard to her title as president of the rescue, she said: “anyone can write that. The thing is he’s charging me, and I’m not even on board. I have nothing to do with the rescue. I just work here.”

According to The News-Enterprise, SMITH did not allow the news agency to enter the facility “which she said acts solely as a rescue and houses aggressive dogs.”

Mr. McNutt said the animals remain in the care of Always Faithful Animal Rescue.
