On December 5, 2024, Escambia County Circuit Court Judge John Simon sentenced 63-year-old LOIS ADAMS HALL (pictured), after she was found guilty of misdemeanor unlawful confinement or abandonment of animals and felony causing cruel death, pain or suffering of animals.

Animal Control responded several times to a property on Still Road where Officers found three horses who were being kept in a fenced yard. Animal Control Officers said the water troughs were empty, there was no shelter, and the field where the horses were being kept had no grass; “It is nothing but dirt”, reported one of the Officers.

The family on the property were repeatedly advised to take the horses to the veterinarian to be checked out but they disregarded the recommendations.

A neighbor told Animal Control that they stepped in and had been feeding and watering the horses.

On October 2, 2023, during one of Animal Control's visits at the property, Officers talked to HALL’s daughter and stressed that the horses needed to be checked by a veterinarian or Officers would remove them from the property. HALL’s daughter told officers that she told her mother that multiple times but HALL would not listen.

One of the horses, Ajax, was so emaciated that when he went down, he could not get back up. On October 23, 2023, Ajax was sadly euthanized to avoid further suffering.

Judge Simon gifted HALL with eighteen months’ probation and ordered her to not “own” any animals.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39-year-old NATASHA JACKIE WILHELM and 40-year-old SEAN MICHAEL HUBSCHMITT (both pictured), owners of K9 Training for Heroes, a Sarasota dog training business for veterans with PTSD.

This case dates back to October 27, 2024, when deputies responded to a home on 4087 Vana Drive in Sarasota after receiving a complaint about neglected dogs at the property. It was a neighbor who alerted the sheriff’s office after she had not seen anyone at the house since September 25, 2024, the day before Hurricane Helene hit Florida. The neighbor said that she could see “extremely malnourished dogs in cages” through the windows and further reported that there was an “unbearable” smell coming from the house.

Another nearby neighbor dragged one of the dogs in his/her cage to the lanai and gave the dog water. This poor soul was described to be extremely malnourished and emaciated with pus on his eyes, lying in his own fecal matter.

Responding deputies noticed a strong smell coming from the back of the home and made entry for a welfare check. Deputies reported that the house was in a state of disarray with a strong odor of decomposition, and feces and urine everywhere.

Deputies discovered four dogs, Piccolo, Rocky, Shylin and Tank.

Sadly, Piccolo and Shylin were found dead. One of them was discovered in a cage in a bedroom and the other one was found “unrecognizably decomposed” in a cage outside.

Although Rocky and Tank were found alive, they were extremely emaciated and later had to be euthanized due to their condition.

Deputies said there was no food or water for the Voiceless Victims except for what neighbors attempted to bring in.

Piccolo, Rocky, Shylin, and Tank were not connected to any clients; WILHELM and HUBSCHMITT were their guardians.

Piccolo and Shylin were taken to Sarasota County Animal Services and necropsies were performed. Results showed their cause of death was due to starvation.

Rocky and Tank were taken to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital where they were euthanized.

WILHELM and HUBSCHMITT told investigators that Shylin died before Hurricane Helene impacted Sarasota and they planned to bury her in the yard but were unable to because of HUBSCHMITT’s physical condition and ailments. According to court records, he is a disabled veteran and has service dogs who are “well cared for.

The duo further told investigators that days before Hurricane Helene, they had to move out of the home “due to issues with the house and finances” and moved in with HUBSCHMITT’s parents. WILHELM and HUBSCHMITT went on to state that they could not take Piccolo, Rocky, Shylin and Tank with them, so they left them behind and agreed to take turns to go to the home to check on them, to feed them, and walk them.

WILHELM and HUBSCHMITT were arrested on November 20, 2024, and charged with three felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty. Court records show they will be arraigned on January 3, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.

On December 4, 2024, the St. Albans Police Department received information about a dog who had been abused and neglected at a residence near Fisher Pond Road in the town of St. Albans.

A Good Samaritan found the furvictim, a 1½-year-old male Rottweiler named Hank, and reached out to the nonprofit organization For the Love of Dogs Vermont, who rescued Hank, and subsequently alerted the authorities.

Hank had been abandoned in the residence for an extended length of time with no heat, electricity, food or water. For the Love of Dogs Vermont said: “He was found alone on a couch in that cold abandoned home, shivering and weak.”

Part of a Facebook post by Vermonters Against Animal Cruelty and Abandonment of December 12, 2024, read: “After being rushed to the vets and provided emergency care, he was moved into a medical foster. He received a body condition score of 1 out of 9 by two separate veterinarians, determining he was in the final stage of starvation before death.”

In a subsequent post, the animal rescue wrote: “Thanks to the collaborative efforts of VAACA’s team of rescues he received immediate medical care and placement in foster with Potter's Angels Rescue, where he will soon be available for adoption. At the time of his rescue, he weighed just 53 lbs and now is a whopping 73.8 lbs and gaining daily!!

From an investigation into the incident, it emerged that 34-year-old KYLE GRATTON (pictured) was responsible for abandoning Hank.

Police arrested GRATTON on December 24, 2024, and he is now facing felony animal cruelty charges. Police said GRATTON is scheduled to appear in the Franklin County Superior Courthouse on February 4, 2025, at 8:30 a.m.
