On the early and hot afternoon of July 23, 2025, the Clare County Central Dispatch received a report about a dog and a young child left inside a vehicle, not running with the windows partially opened at the Family Fare parking lot in Harrison.

Responding deputies found a dog and a five-year-old child in a pickup truck with the windows down less than six inches. The dog was panting, and the child was sweating. The outside temperature was 82 degrees and according to deputies, inside the vehicle it was even hotter.

Deputies determined the dog and the child had been left unattended for fifteen minutes before witnesses called dispatch.

After the dog and the child were rescued and moved into a cool car, deputies waited another eighteen minutes in the parking lot before someone came to check on the dog and the child.

Thankfully, there were no injuries to the dog or child.

Eventually, the child’s mother, 31-year-old NATASHA MARIE GARCIA and her boyfriend, 35-year-old NATHAN ROGER CRANDELL, who was seen placing the child in the car, returned to the vehicle and were placed under arrest.

The couple were booked into the Clare County Jail and they are each facing one count of animal cruelty, one count of fourth degree child abuse, and one count of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

GARCIA and CRANDELL were arraigned in the 80th District Court of Clare County. Bond for GARCIA was set at $1,500/10%, and for CRANDELL bond was set at $2,000/10%.

At the time of writing, records show they are still at the Clare County Jail.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested 48-year-old JASON ALLEN BIGGERS (pictured), following an investigation into dogfighting, conducted by Lake County Sheriff’s Office Agricultural Marine Unit Detectives.

According to the press release provided to Voice For Us, on the early morning of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. team and Agricultural Marine investigators executed a search warrant at a residence on 31938 3rd Avenue in Deland.

The search led to the discovery of twenty-nine (29) dogs. The sheriff's office said the furvictims, ranging in age from elderly to puppies, were found “chained and in kennels.”

The majority of the dogs had scarring consistent with dogfighting, and were in various stages of healing.

The sheriff's office said the search also revealed the presence of narcotics.

BIGGERS was arrested and charged with twenty-nine counts of baiting and fighting of animals and twenty-nine counts of animal cruelty.

At the time of writing, records show BIGGERS is being held at the Lake County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

All of the furvictims were placed at the Lake County Animal Shelter.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office tells me that no animals were found deceased and none of the rescued dogs were euthanized.

The sheriff's office is asking anyone who has information on BIGGERS’ activities to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS. Callers may be eligible for a reward. Thank you!

On December 13, 2024, the Animal Services team of Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, was contacted by an anonymous former employee of Your Dog’s Best Friends, an animal boarding and grooming facility in the Del Ray neighborhood of the City of Alexandria.

The former employee reported the death of one dog, as well as the abuse inflicted on several other dogs while they were being groomed at Your Dog’s Best Friends.

Additionally, the former employee provided initial video evidence depicting the cruelty that took place at the hands of one groomer.

In a press release provided to Voice For Us by Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan L. Porter, the groomer was identified as 29-year-old KEVIN MALIK SANDERS (pictured).

On January 24, 2025, with the assistance of the Alexandria Police Department, the Animal Services team served a search warrant for additional video evidence. According to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the search warrant led to the seizure of more than 600 hours of video footage.

As part of the investigation, the Chief of Animal Services and Alexandria police officers began interviewing witnesses.

In late June/early July, charges were sent to the Grand Jury for the City of Alexandria for consideration.

Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan L. Porter announced that on July 14, 2025, the Grand Jury returned a five-count indictment against SANDERS charging him with “one felony count of animal cruelty resulting in the death of a companion dog and four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty of a companion dog not resulting in death”, states the press release.

SANDERS was arrested on July 21, 2025, and is being held without bond at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria explained in their press release that the felony charge refers to the death of a young Golden Retriever named Abigail which occurred on July 12, 2024, and the misdemeanor charges refer to the abuse to other dogs seen in the seized video evidence, which spanned from December 17, 2024, to January 24, 2025.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria said that when SANDERS was arrested, he was still employed at Your Dog’s Best Friends.

According to Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Abigail’s family did not file a complaint against Your Dog’s Best Friends because “the events that led to the dog’s death were undisclosed by the facility.”

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria encourages animal guardians “to do extensive research when choosing any animal-related grooming, boarding or sitting services or facilities.” Click here for a list of things to consider and ask when choosing an animal boarding or animal grooming facility.
