The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 51-year-old CLYDE RANDOLPH FERGUSON JR. (pictured).

Calhoun County Sheriff Michael Bryant said in a press release that on the evening of Saturday, August 16, 2025, deputies responded to a residence on NW Audrey Lane regarding a reported domestic disturbance.

The initial report indicated that during the incident, “a household dog had been injured with a machete”, stated the release.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with FERGUSON who was located in the front yard near his vehicle. According to Sheriff Bryant, deputies observed “indicators of intoxication, including slurred speech, unsteady balance, and the odor of alcohol.”

As per the release, the investigation revealed that following a verbal argument inside the home, FERGUSON retrieved a machete and walked throughout the residence and yard, making erratic statements.

Witnesses reported hearing a dog yelp in distress. Sheriff Bryant said that shortly after, one of the family dogs was found with “significant lacerations” to his/her neck and side.

Deputies confirmed the dog’s injuries were consistent with cuts caused by a sharp object. The furvictim appeared to be in severe pain

According to the press release, FERGUSON denied harming the dog but admitted to grabbing the machete because of “issues” with family members.

Deputies did not immediately find the machete despite searching FERGUSON’s vehicle and outbuildings.

From the investigation it emerged that the dog’s injuries were inflicted intentionally, and FERGUSON was placed under arrest. He was transported to the Calhoun County Jail and booked on one count of aggravated animal cruelty, excessive pain/death.

At the time of writing, records show that FERGUSON is no longer in custody.

Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton announced the arrest of 24-year-old ZACHARY NICHOLAS MILLER (pictured).

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, deputies responded to a property in the 400 block of Cash Hollow Road. According to a news release from the WCSO, upon arrival, deputies smelled decaying animals near a barn on the property. Sadly, they discovered ten dead chickens, a dead pig, and two dead rabbits.

An agent for the Department of Agriculture responded to the scene as well and determined the two rabbits found deceased were domestic rabbits.

According to Sheriff Sexton, MILLER stated that a raccoon killed the ten dead chickens.

A dog was found chained outside the barn without access to clean water. As per the release, “The bucket of water Miller indicated was the dog’s water source was filled with algae and worms.”

MILLER surrendered the dog to Animal Control.

MILLER was placed under arrest and charged with four counts of animal cruelty. He was transported to the Washington County Detention Center and released after posting a $5,000 bond.

According to the sheriff’s office, additional charges from the Department of Agriculture are pending due to MILLER not disposing of dead livestock.

The Davie County Sheriff’s Office reports that 76-year-old DONALD GRAY PAYNE is facing charges after many animals were found in poor living conditions.

According to the office’s press release, on August 6, 2025, deputies from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division executed a search warrant at PAYNE’s home on 837 Turkey Foot Road in Mocksville where they found two cats and eleven dogs.

As per the press release, the animals were found in “unacceptable living conditions” and all were found to have parasitic infections.  Many of the dogs were “severely underweight and suffering from skin infections.”

The two cats and all of the dogs were taken to the Davie County Animal Shelter where they are being assessed by veterinarians. PAYNE surrendered them all to Davie County Animal Services.

The sheriff’s office tells me that no animals were found deceased on the property and none of the rescued furvictims were euthanized. Three of the poor souls are still on medication while the other ten are available for adoption. The sheriff’s office didn’t specify whether the furvictims on medication are cats or dogs.

PAYNE’s mugshot is not available because he was released on a $5,000 unsecure bond. He is facing three felony counts of cruelty to animals and seven misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals. PAYNE’s next court appearance is set for September 25, 2025, at Davie County District Court.

If you wish and can afford to donate toward the furvictims’ medical care, checks can be mailed to Davie County Animal Services, 291 Eaton Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Thank you!
