An investigation into two malnourished dogs led to the arrest of 34-years-old RYAN WOOD and 31-years-old CRYSTAL WOOD on Monday, January 31.
The investigation began on January 25, 2022, when Stafford County Sheriff’s Deputy O.J. Hepperle went to a townhouse in England Run for a welfare check on a dog.
Deputy Hepperle discovered one dog inside the residence and another one in the backyard.
The furbaby inside the home was a 6-year-old mixed breed, medium-sized named Gracie. Gracie was found extremely thin.
The furbaby found in the backyard was a 2-year-old Pitbull named Dean whose condition was even worse than Gracie’s.
Dean was so emaciated that he struggled to stand.
Deputy Hepperle took the VOICELESS VICTIMS to the White Oak Animal Hospital.
Dean had to be carried as he was not able to walk.
A medical examination of him revealed that his organs were shutting down and his chances of survival appeared slim.
Deputy Hepperle decided to foster Dean and took him home with her.
On January 27, Deputy Hepperle noticed that Dean’s breathing was labored so she took him to the Virginia Veterinary Center where a vet used an IV to stabilize Dean and kept him for continued care.
Just after midnight on January 28, staff from the Virginia Veterinary Center called Deputy Hepperle to let her know that Dean was rapidly declining and may need to be euthanized.
At that point Deputy Hepperle rushed to the clinic and as soon as she entered the room where Dean was, Dean’s heart rate amazingly increased.
Dean is still receiving around-the-clock care.
Gracie remains at the Friends of Stafford County Animal Shelter.
I rarely cry tears of joy when I type and post animal cruelty stories and it’s happening right now because a few hours ago, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office published a reassuring update on Facebook which read: “ More encouraging news for Dean and Gracie! The cute canines had a follow up appointment this morning and will continue to be monitored closely, but are improving. Deputy Hepperle wanted to give a huge thank you to the staff at White Oak Animal Hospital, they have been awesome!”
RYAN and CRYSTAL WOOD, two soulless, heartless, and worthless individuals, have each been charged with one count of felony animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count.
The couple were released by a magistrate on an unsecured bond.
For those who wish and can afford to help out with Gracie and Dean’s medical care, please, visit Friends of the Stafford County Animal Shelter’s Facebook page. Thank you!
All my heartfelt thanks to Deputy Hepperle. I think she is the main reason why Dean is still alive!

Oh, God bless these two precious dogs and Deputy Hepperle. What in hell is WRONG with people??? Please don't just give them a slap on the wrist. NO MORE LETTING THESE MONSTERS OFF EASY!!! This abuse of animals will never end if they aren't properly punished or, better yet, disposed of.
When I look at those two beautiful faces & read they are healing both physically & mentally I too felt tears of joy. It was so beautifully stated above that Deputy Hepperle is Gracie & Dean’s spiritual & mental savior as well as the staff & vets for their physical healing. The two soulless monsters who watched as the life almost exited these blessed beings must be punished here on earth as their punishment in a dark corner in Hell is awaiting. Please get better Dean & Gracie!!!
