On the afternoon of Sunday, April 3, the dispatch center of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting gunshots heard in the area of 24000 Restive Way, Grass Valley.
The caller said they also heard a female screaming.
As deputies were responding to the scene, a call came in from a woman reporting that her dog had been shot by her neighbors. The area of the incident was the same as the first report.
Once on the scene, deputies made contact with the parties involved, including 66-years-old ROBIN LORRAINE WRIGHT and her son 30-years-old MATTHEW JAMES WRIGHT (both pictured).
According to a press release by the sheriff’s office, the WRIGHTS declined any incident or shooting took place.
Deputies searched for the dog who had been shot but were not able to find him/her.
Detectives were called in and applied for a search warrant for the WRIGHTS’ home.
The sheriff’s office said that when MATTHEW JAMES WRIGHT was questioned again, he admitted to shooting the dog.
WRIGHT said he shot the dog, a Poodle, twice because he/she was on his property.
At that point deputies placed him under arrest.
While units were on scene, the dispatch center received a call reporting a loose and injured Poodle matching the description of the Poodle who had been shot by WRIGHT.
Thankfully, deputies found the furbaby a few miles down on Garden Bar Road.
The furbaby was immediately reunited with his/her guardian and was taken to the vet to be treated.
While officials were still on the scene and waiting for the search warrant to be signed,
ROBIN LORRAINE WRIGHT returned home.
Witnesses’ statements identified her as the one leaving the property with the Poodle in her vehicle after the reported shooting.
After evidence gathered on the scene linked her to the shooting, deputies took her into custody and both mother and son were transported to the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
Mother and son each face charges of cruelty to animals, grand theft of a dog, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
According to online arrest records, the mother additionally faces charges of threatening a crime with the intent to terrorize and exhibiting a firearm; her son is additionally charged with assault with a firearm and willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence.
The duo were released the following day.
The mother was able to post a $15,000 and the son was free on a $25,000 bond.
