ROBERT LEE WILSON arrested – Two deceased horses found on his El Paso County property and another had to be euthanized

- Colorado, USA -

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 52-year-old ROBERT LEE WILSON (pictured).

On April 8, 2026, following a report of a dead horse on WILSON’s property in the 12500 block of South Lauppe Road, Yoder, deputies were dispatched to the location to conduct an animal welfare check.

According to the sheriff’s office, the reporting party stated that the deceased horse was visible from the road and added that there were other horses on the property who did not have access to food or water.

Upon arrival, the responding deputies began an initial assessment and located one deceased horse on the property.

In light of the circumstances, deputies determined that immediate intervention was needed to rescue the remaining horses. The poor animals were immediately provided with water as there was none on the property.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office Specialized Patrol Unit who are trained in equine animal welfare guidelines, were called in and assumed the investigation.

The following day, on April 9, 2026, deputies returned to WILSON’s property. A veterinarian, the brand inspector, and resources from a local horse rescue were also present.

A drone which was deployed to survey the property located a second deceased horse.

The veterinarian examined the two remaining horses on site and advised deputies that they needed urgent medical attention, so the horses were taken to a local veterinarian clinic.

After arriving at the clinic, one of the two horses was sadly euthanized due to his/her severe condition. The sheriff's office said that the second horse “... remains in critical care with signs of advanced malnourishment.”

Necropsies were then performed on the deceased horses to determine their cause of death.

On May 13, 2026, after receiving the necropsy results, WILSON was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Jail. He was charged with three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, and one count of cruelty to animals. Bond was set at $10,000 and at the time of writing, online records show that WILSON was released after posting it.

Court records show that WILSON is scheduled to be back in court on May 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
