An off-duty Ridgefield Police cop was placed on administrative leave after killing a beloved black mama bear in Newton.
The fatal shooting of the mama bear known as Bobbi to locals, “leaving her two cubs orphaned and ill-equipped to survive on their own, has understandably sparked widespread outrage and grief”, tweeted The Humane Society of the United States, adding: “The fate of her cubs remains our most urgent concern.”
The murder of mama Bobbi took place on Thursday, May 12, on a private property.
Authorities did not confirm whether it was the cop’s property.
Ridgefield Police Chief Jeff Kreitz in an email to The Ridgefield Press said: “We are aware that one of our officers was involved in an off-duty incident in which a bear was shot and killed in Newtown. The incident is under investigation by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and we are awaiting the results. Additionally, this is a personnel matter which is under investigation internally.”
The identity of the murderer has not been revealed.
Authorities have not said whether the murderer has been placed on paid or unpaid leave or what Ridgefield police’s internal investigation entails.
As for Bobbi’s babies, state officials captured them “because of posts on social media encouraging people to feed the bears, potentially putting the animals in jeopardy.”
Jenny Dickson, director of the Wildlife Division at DEEP, said that the agency had initially said Bobbi’s orphans would be left to forage on their own in the hopes that they wouldn’t need human intervention. During a press conference at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington, she explained: “That’s always our first goal, it’s to try to keep wild animals wild.” But then, officials became concerned for the cubs’ safety due to the risk of continued public interaction.
“So, it became much more important for us to make sure that they were safe”, said Dickson.
On Monday, May 16, part of a Facebook post published by DEEP read: “One cub came down from the tree and was tranquilized and safely captured by DEEP Wildlife Division staff. The other cub remains in the tree.”
A subsequent post advised that: “The second cub has been tranquilized and captured successfully. Both cubs are very healthy. They will be placed into the care of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator within the next 24 hours.”
On May 18, DEEP posted an update: “Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) wildlife biologists want to let everyone know the cubs arrived safely at the rehabilitation facility and seem to be settling in.”

Why must humans murder animals?! I hope this cop loses his job, maybe this will teach him that senseless murder is wrong, but unfortunately past practice is punishment consisting of paid leave & a quiet return to their job or one in a different department. We move these violators around like checker pieces (Priests) in hopes the public will ‘forget’ & ‘move on’. Hopefully not this time. RIP BOBBI.
