Ottawa County authorities removed from a small shed 27 cats found in unsanitary living conditions

- Michigan, USA -

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is conducting an animal cruelty investigation involving cats being hoarded.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said that Ottawa County Animal Control deputies began the investigation on Thursday, May 19, after receiving a tip of numerous cats being housed in a storage shed in the 10300 block of Port Sheldon Street in Olive Township.

At the address, Animal Control and Road Patrol deputies located a structure that was approximately 8 feet x 5 feet in size.

Inside the structure, officers found twenty-seven cats.

The sheriff’s office said “some of the cats were found to be injured or in poor health and all were held in unsanitary living conditions. Several of the cats were found to be pregnant.”

With the assistance of the Harbor Humane Society, deputies removed the cats who have since been treated by a veterinarian.

On Friday, May 27, Ottawa County Sheriff's units continued the investigation, which led them to 2 properties: a residence in the 14300 block of Essenburg Drive in Holland Township and another property in the 5700 block of 104th Avenue in Olive Township.

After searching the properties, no additional endangered animals were found.

Investigators have identified the cats’ guardian a 68-year-old woman of Holland Township, whose name has not been released.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office tells me that all of the furbabies are safe and photos are not being released at the moment as the case is still being actively investigated.

When the investigation is concluded, the findings will be turned over to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office for potential criminal charges related to animal cruelty.

The sheriff’s office encourages anyone who has information about this case to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer at 1-877-88 SILENT (745368) or via mosotips.com. Thank you!
