Following a month’s long investigation into suspected animal cruelty, Torrington Animal Control and Torrington police executed a search warrant at a home on 170 Washington Avenue on April 28, 2022.
At the home, officials found 8 cats, 6 dogs, 1 Bearded Dragon lizard, and 1 hedgehog living in poor and unsanitary conditions. The animals were then brought to Bantam Lake Animal Hospital to be evaluated.
Police said the cats were found to be in fair condition but not socialized. A kitten was found to be dehydrated and underweight.
All six dogs were dehydrated and some of them suffered from either being underweight and/or have infections.
Both the Bearded Dragon and hedgehog were also underweight and had suffered from general neglect.
In connection with this case, police charged 30-years-old NICOLINA MARIE SCALORA and 24-years-old GREGORY JAMES ZARINS (both pictured).
SCALORA turned herself in to police on Monday, May 16, and ZARINS turned himself in on Tuesday, May 17.
SCALORA and ZARINS are each charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty.
They were both released on a non-surety bond and are scheduled to appear in Superior Court on May 23.
Police said the animals will stay with the Torrington Animal Control until the court determines their future.
