The Etowah County Sheriff's Office arrested 25-year-old MARKUS ROBERT LANDRUM (pictured).
On July 2, 2025, Ivalee and Gallant Volunteer Fire Departments, along with the Etowah County Sheriff's Office Emergency Services Unit, responded to a structure fire in the Ivalee community on Rogers Road.
LANDRUM was located on scene by emergency personnel and was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated.
An investigation conducted by the Etowah County Arson Task Force together with the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division determined that the fire had been deliberately set. Furthermore, the fire left trapped inside the house three dogs, a Chihuahua, a Dachshund, and a German Shepherd. Sadly, the helpless souls lost their precious lives in the fire.
Investigators said evidence suggests the fire may have stemmed from a domestic-related incident.
LANDRUM, of Attalla, was charged with three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and arson.
At the time of writing, records show LANDRUM is being held into the Etowah County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton said: “This is a deeply disturbing case that shows a blatant disregard for life and property. We are thankful for the swift response from our local fire departments and our investigators who are working hard to ensure justice is served. Cases involving intentional harm to animals and the reckless endangerment of others will always be treated with the utmost seriousness.”
The investigation remains active.
