The Komodo dragon or Komodo monitor, is a species of lizard that can be found in Indonesia in the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores and Gili Motang. These extremely big reptiles hunt invertebrates, mammals and birds. Occasionally they also attack humans. The mating process starts between May and August, the eggs are laid in September and hatch in April.
Unfortunately, Indonesia plans to shut down Komodo Island because people steal and smuggle these creatures. Komodo Island is one of the three islands that forms the Komodo National Park. The smuggled dragons are sold to buyers peddling them as “traditional” medicine.
Indonesian law prescribes jail for up to 10 years and a fine for trafficking endangered animals. Despite the penalties, the trade is still widespread across parts of the Indonesian archipelago.
