Kimba the giraffe passed away at Cincinnati Zoo

- Ohio, USA -

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, through a Facebook post announced the passing of the 12-year-old male giraffe Kimba on Sunday, November 17.

Last week Kimba underwent surgery to repair his hooves and then developed complications.

FOX 8 reports that curator Christina Gorsuch told The Enquirer:

“He had been dealing with pain related to chronic lameness since last summer, and we were looking forward to him feeling better after he had a successful procedure last week to fix his hooves.”

Kimba collapsed to the ground a little after 1:00 a.m.

Once the necropsy’s results are back, the zoo will know more about the cause of his needless death.

Kimba came to the zoo in 2008 from the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island.

He sired six calves and his seventh one is on the way but he will never see his baby.

One of his calves, 3-year-old Cora, is still at the zoo.
