The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-years-old JAMIE LYNN KUJAWA (pictured).
On April 19, 2022, an animal enforcement officer with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence, on 472 Hollyhock Lane in Spring Hill, about a woman possibly shooting her own dogs with a BB gun.
The reporting party, who shares a fence with KUJAWA, told the officer that while he was working outside, he heard the sound of a BB gun being fired and then heard dogs yelping in pain.
The witness further stated that over a span of 30 to 45 minutes, he heard a BB gun fire approximately 15 times.
When the officer made contact with KUJAWA, she initially said that she did not own a BB gun.
The officer then asked KUJAWA to see proof of vaccination for all three dogs, which KUJAWA was unable to provide.
“Upon inspecting the dogs, the animal enforcement officer noted various injuries and scaring on the feet and paws of each dog”, stated a news release by the sheriff’s office.
KUJAWA explained those injuries by saying that the dogs had recently been involved in a fight, and she had to use water from a hose to break it up.
The officer further noted that one of the dogs appeared in worse condition than the others with numerous fresh puncture wounds to his/her paws and legs.
KUJAWA simply received a verbal warning for having unvaccinated dogs.
She was “instructed she had 10 days to get the dogs vaccinated and provide proof that the injured dog received treatment”, said the sheriff’s office.
The following day, a deputy and an animal enforcement officer returned to KUJAWA’s home to further investigate the potential of criminal violations.
The deputy first spoke to the witness, and after confirming his earlier statements, he went to the backyard where through the fence he saw KUJAWA’s three dogs who appeared to be limping.
Once at KUJAWA’s property, the deputy asked her to see the dogs.
The deputy reported that two of the dogs “appeared to have fresh wounds on their front paws and legs” and indicated that some of the injuries appeared to be consistent with dogs that have been fighting.
Unfortunately, the deputy was unable to touch or thoroughly inspect the dogs “due to the dogs not being comfortable with being touched”, stated the release.
KUJAWA was advised she remained under a 10-day warning to have the dogs checked by a veterinarian. On April 28, 2022, she called the sheriff’s office to say that she was financially unable to take the dogs to veterinarian and inquired about the county’s owner surrender policy.
On May 3, 2022, KUJAWA surrendered two of the three dogs to Hernando County Animal Services and two days later a veterinarian at Hernando County Animal Services examined the furbabies.
The vet was able to remove a lead pellet from the right paw of one of the dogs.
On May 9, 2022, both dogs were then sent to a local veterinarian for x-rays.
The sheriff’s office said that in the first dog, the vet identified “approximately 61 BBs and 19 lead pellets located throughout the dog’s legs, torso, and head.”
In the second dog the veterinarian “identified approximately 71 BBs and 22 lead pellets throughout the dog’s legs, torso, and head.”
A total of 173 projectiles were found embedded between the two dogs.
Deputies returned to KUJAWA’s property on May 10, 2022, and arrested her on multiple counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty.
Other animals present at the home were also removed, including, the third dog, three cats, a ferret, and a bird.
An investigation revealed that KUJAWA “used a gas-powered BB gun to shoot the dogs when they attempted to dig under the property fence to get out of her yard.”
KUJAWA eventually admitted to shooting her dogs and said she been shooting them for approximately two months.
The sheriff’s office said that the condition of the animals removed from the property is being investigated.
Online records show KUJAWA was released from the Hernando County Jail two days after her arrest after posting bond.
