Investigation underway in Smith County after a mare was found with chemical burns

- Texas, USA -

The Smith County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office is investigating an animal cruelty case after a mare named Bitsy was found with severe chemical burns on Winona Lakes Ranch.

On Monday, June 6, Bitsy’s guardian contacted the Constable’s Office and reported that Bitsy was suffering from what appeared to be chemical burns.

In an email Constable Josh Joplin told me that the night prior, Bitsy “was fed and during feeding was found to have a liquid of some kind on her face and head.”

Her guardian cleaned it off and the following day Bitsy was found as the devastating picture below shows.

I asked Constable Joplin whether the injuries sustained by Bitsy are life-threatening and he explained: “The horse received medical attention at the location from the horse ranch’s on call vet that they use. The vet did a great job of cleaning and treating the wounds. At this time most of the injuries are topical and physical based upon skin damage. It is expected to heal. No life threatening injuries at this time. The horse will remain on antibiotics for the time being.”

Officials believe “that someone threw a substance on the horse. It is possible that someone could do this from the roadway, as the ranch is bordered by 2 roadways. These horses have numerous acres to roam and a very nice facility where they are cared for and housed.”

If you have information about this sickening and cruel act, please come forward and speak up for Bitsy.

Please call (903) - 590 - 4870 and like Constable Joplin said: “Help us get justice for this animal.”
