Investigation underway after dog who was dragged behind a truck in Washington Parish died

The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating after receiving reports of a pickup truck dragging a dog and is asking the public for help in identifying the driver.

The vehicle, a silver Toyota Tacoma without a visible license plate, was seen dragging a helpless dog on the afternoon of April 29, 2026, along 7 Mile Road heading north toward Highway 436.

A humane and brave citizen, Ms. Hannah Lombas, witnessed the despicable act and quickly jumped in a vehicle and started chasing the pickup truck. Ms. Lombas recounted the incident on her Facebook profile.

Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith issued a BOLO on the pickup truck and in a recent update on the case, which “received nationwide interest”, he said: “We are treating this with all the seriousness that it deserves. This is a criminal investigation, at this point. I had thought that on Monday we would probably have a resolution by now. Uh that was, I had expected we would get some full cooperation from some of the people of interest but they’re a little hesitant because of all the emotions on Facebook. Some people are saying some very unkind things, but this investigation is not driven by emotion. It’s driven by evidence and I just wanted to give everybody just a quick update on the situation. It may take a little bit longer but we are going to make a case that sticks. “

Sheriff Smith also said that as part of the investigation, a necropsy is being conducted at Louisiana State University to help determine the furvictim’s cause of death.
