A joint investigation by the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Law Enforcement Department along with the Acushnet Police Department has been launched after a deceased cat and a decomposed guinea pig were found inside trash bags sealed with duct tape.
The gruesome discovery was made on March 7, by residents who spotted the furbabies and alerted Acushnet Police.
Mr. Mike DeFina, Communications & Media Relations Officer for Animal Rescue League of Boston, said in a press release that the cat and the guinea pig were found “along a tree line behind a parking area on Lake Street, which runs along with New Bedford Reservoir.”
Animal control responded to the scene.
Mr. DeFina explained: “They were in garbage bags that were sealed with duct tape, and the cat’s head was exposed – the guinea pig bag was just feet away from the cat.”
The cat, a female about a year old, had severe head injuries.
An ARL’s veterinary forensic exam and x-rays did not reveal any obvious signs of injury beside the multiple skull fractures so officials concluded that the cat was not struck by a car.
The guinea pig was too badly decomposed and the cause of death is not certain.
Mr. Defina also said that there is no way of knowing how long the bags had been there.
Police and ARL are investigating the incident as a possible animal cruelty case and are reaching out to the public for information.
