On February 6, Griffin Police Officer Matthew Kerlin responded to a call related to animal cruelty.
Police said in a press release that Officer Kerlin spoke with Courtney Smith and learned that she had left her Pitbull with her brother while she traveled to California in November 2019.
Ms. Smith then told Officer Kerlin that she returned in March 2021, and was unaware of what had happened to her dog.
It just so happened that her brother, 35-years-old HARVEY WILLIS SMITH JR. (pictured below), gave her his old cell phone to use until she could get a new one.
At one point Ms. Smith looked at the pictures her brother had left on his phone and she discovered a series of photos and a video of her brother “slaying a dog”, said police.
Ms. Smith told Officer Kerlin that the pictures showed the rear seat of a vehicle with blood and her brother holding a severed dog’s head.
She then said that the video depicted her brother holding the dog’s skull and moving the dog’s jaw to make it look like the dog was talking.
Ms. Smith then questioned her brother who admitted the dog in the pictures and video was her Pitbull.
SMITH also told his sister that “he had ‘put the dog out of its misery’ in a joking manner”, stated the release.
As part of the investigation, the pictures and the video were obtained by police and evidence supported Ms. Smith’s version of the facts.
Furthermore, the evidence was also consistent with a residence on 1015 Lake Avenue, Griffin.
Detective Rich Powell then contacted SMITH on an unrelated issue but during the interview he asked SMITH about the dog and SMITH denied killing the furbaby.
Police said that SMITH said he had “eaten the dog” after he/she had been hit by a car.
However, the video and the pictures obtained by police did not back SMITH’s side of the story.
Warrants were then issued for SMITH for aggravated Felony cruelty to animals.
SMITH was arrested on February 15, and online records show he is still in Spalding County Jail.
