GAIL GEIDE GIUSTINO, mail carrier, arrested for taking animals she found along her mail route and hoarding them in her house

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, someone reported that a postal worker was collecting or stealing cats on the job.

The postal worker was identified as 77-year-old GAIL GEIDE GIUSTINO (pictured). Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said that for weeks deputies attempted to get inside GIUSTINO’s home but she was uncooperative.

Deputies then obtained a search warrant for GIUSTINO’s home on SW Meadowlark Circle in Stuart which was executed on July 20, 2026.

While Sheriff Budensiek thought that authorities were going to find no more than twenty or thirty cats, he shockingly faced a totally different reality.

Authorities encountered an overwhelming smell of urine, feces, and ammonia. Sheriff Budensiek said the stench was “unreal.”

According to investigators, the residence was in deplorable condition, with excessive debris and widespread animal waste covering the interior, leaving no safe path for entry.

Authorities discovered dozens and dozens of animals living in cages and squalor.

Martin County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Division, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Martin County Fire Rescue and their HAZMAT Team also responded to the scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, eighty cats and twelve dogs were rescued from GIUSTINO’s home.

Sheriff Budensiek explained that “members of the Martin County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Division and the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast have worked tirelessly, to assess each animal and provide immediate care. They have been able to identify the owner’s of 5 animals and continue the process of identifying other owners.”

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is posting regular updates regarding this case on their Facebook page. They have also posted the photos of the furvictims who were rescued and announced that another cat was reunited with his/her family.

With regard to the rescued dogs, the organization said in one their posts: “We have worked diligently with Martin County Animal Services to verify that the dogs rescued from the hoarding situation belonged to the individual in question, and they have been legally signed over to our shelter. None of the dogs were altered or microchipped, except for one dog, which was registered to her, so we believe these dogs were born in her custody.

Once these dogs have been spayed/neutered & microchipped, they will be ready for adoption.”

While GIUSTINO could have been charged with up to 160 counts of animal cruelty, she was charged with one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count of confinement of animals without sufficient exercise instead. Bond was set at $50,000 and she is no longer in custody.

As Sheriff Budensiek explained, she was only arrested to allow authorities to remove all of the furvictims and save them from “death.”

Sheriff Budensiek said in the press release: “While Ms. Giustino believed she was helping these animals, she was going about it in the wrong way, ultimately being unable to provide the care they required. MCSO is also working to ensure she receives the assistance and resources she needs.”

Court records show that GIUSTINO is scheduled to be arraigned in Martin County Circuit Court on August 20, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
