Following horrific torture of a helpless dog the Greek government vows to toughen animal abuse laws

- Crete, Greece -

Following the recent outrage over the horrific torture of a dog, the Greek government has vowed to toughen animal abuse laws.

Makis Voridis, the Minister of Rural Development and Food, said he will push to introduce a stricter criminal system resulting in more effective prosecution and punishment of animal abusers.

Voridis said: “The recent extreme torture of an animal that took place on Crete highlights the need of introducing a tougher penal framework, which will make prosecution and punishment of animal tortures more effective. In the immediate future, we will propose the adoption of such legislation to Parliament.”

The torture that Voridis refers to, happened on Monday, October 5, when a 55-year-old unnamed male tied up his dog in his backyard and then castrated him without anesthesia.

The poor furbaby’s cries drew the attention of a German national who is an animal lover and is known to help stray animals in the area.

He looked over the fence and saw the dog hanging from a rope and immediately rushed him to a local veterinarian clinic.

The dog underwent emergency surgery for an hour.

The vet, Mr. Kostas Terezakis, said that despite the abuse the dog suffered, he never showed signs of aggression to anyone.

Mr. Terezakis also said that this is the first time he has seen a dog with such severe injuries survive.

He has been hailed as a hero in Greece as he refused to get paid for the medical care provided to the dog.

On October 8, the soulless and heartless individual who tortured the poor dog turned himself in after the authorities were looking for him.

He said he abused his dog because he wanted to play with toys.

According to Greece Greek Reporter, the criminal has been fined €30,000 ($35,500) for the abuse and he has been suspended from his job while the investigation is active.

The dog is recovering and is ready to be adopted.
