DEREK LEE ADAMSON jailed for causing suffering to animals leading to the death of two calves

- Wales, United Kingdom -

40-years-old DEREK LEE ADAMSON (pictured below) appeared in Wrexham Magistrates Court on Friday, February 25, on animal cruelty charges.

The court heard that as a result of ADAMSON’s neglect, two calves died and others were not cared for adequately.

ADAMSON, of Pont Wen, was found guilty of numerous charges, including three of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal as well as:

· Failing to care appropriately for ill or injured farmed animals without delay

· Failing to isolate sick or injured farmed animals in suitable accommodation

· Failing to feed a wholesome diet to farmed animals

· Failing to ensure farmed animals have access to suitable fresh water supply

· Failing to inspect housed calves twice daily to check state of well-being

· Failing to clean / disinfect housing / stall / pen / equipment used for calves

· Failing to provide calves with appropriate bedding

· Failing to notify the secretary of state of the death of an animal and enter details in an animal passport.

As reported by The National, the court decided the offence was so serious, due to “ill treatment in (a) commercial context resulting in death of two young calves”, that a custodial sentence was justified.

ADAMSON received two consecutive sentences of 24 weeks for the first of the two causing unnecessary suffering offences, making a total jail term of 48 weeks.

For each of the other charges, ADAMSON received a 10-week concurrent sentence.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £2,334 ($3,087), and a victim surcharge of £128 ($169.31).

Additionally, ADAMSON was banned from keeping any animals for 20 years.

According to Wrexham.com, ADAMSON was jailed following a successful prosecution by Wrexham’s Animal Welfare Team and yet he will only spend months behind bars, not years!

Furthermore, Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “This is an excellent result for the team following the wholly inadequate care of animals in his care and causing unnecessary suffering. Animal welfare is a huge responsibility and this custodial sentence shows the severity of the offences in this case.”

These guys have no idea what an adequate sentence is!!!

On an unrelated note, as I was searching for information on ADAMSON, I came across an article by NorthWalesLive of February 1, 2019, reporting that ADAMSON was allowed to walk free from court after he admitted threatening a debt collector with a two-foot piece of wood.

For that offence, ADAMSON was handed a nine-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

I could not believe what I was reading!

ADAMSON appeared from custody via videolink at Caernarfon Crown Court while serving another sentence and told the judge: “Thank you very much. You won't see me back before you your honor. I'm not going to disappoint you.”
