A Pitbull who was stabbed in May and needed extensive treatment is now recovering with his new dad.
On May 18, Mr. Brad Chambers, former police officer, was stuck in traffic on Effingham Street by High Street in Portsmouth when a Pitbull ran under his truck.
As Mr. Chambers got on his knees to get the furbaby to come out, he saw that she was bleeding profusely and that she had been stabbed multiple times.
Mr. Chambers told 10 On Your Side: “I saw the punctures all around her face and her body. And picked her up and then as soon as I picked her up, blood started pouring out of her neck and so it’s is something easily identifiable as a life-threatening wound.”
Thankfully, our hero acted fast and used the emergency trauma kit, he keeps in his trunk, to stop the bleeding from the dog's jugular vein and carotid artery.
Portsmouth first responders also stepped in and rushed the furbaby to the COVE (Center of Veterinary Expertise) in Suffolk where Mr. Chambers paid for the immediate medical expenses.
He named the sweet pup Smoke.
When the furbaby’s health started declining, Mr. Chambers took her to North Carolina State Veterinary Hospital where she underwent surgery.
Smoke’s road to recovery cost a whopping $15,000, some paid for by her new daddy, the rest by fundraising.
10 On Your Side reports that Mr. Chambers says Smoke is healing nicely and getting more comfortable in her new home.
In connection with this case, police took into custody 31-year-old DARREL LOLLIS and he is now facing animal cruelty charge.
