St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has charged 46-year-old CONRAD BENJAMIN MORRIS (pictured below), in connection with an animal cruelty incident that happened in November.
SMNewsNet reports that on November 11, Sheriff’s Office Deputy D. Smith responded to the Upland Drive area in Bushwood about an animal cruelty report.
He spoke with the woman that reported the incident who is also MORRIS’ next door neighbor.
According to the woman, she witnessed MORRIS shooting a dog with a BB gun.
She told the deputy that she saw MORRIS on his back porch shooting eight times at a dog who was in her backyard.
Then, she saw MORRIS shoot the furbaby four more times when the dog was in his back yard.
At one point the woman saw the poor dog nursing his/her right back leg.
The deputy located the dog, a black Lab mix who was seized by animal control as part of an ongoing investigation.
The furbaby was taken to a veterinarian to be examined.
An X-ray showed the dog had one BB pellet in his/her tail, and one on his/her back.
The veterinarian noted these were not new injuries and told police that the old injuries suggested an “ongoing abuse of the animal.”
When police questioned MORRIS the following day, he told police the dog was not his but admitted to tying the dog and feeding him/her every now and then.
MORRIS then admitted to shooting a BB gun on the day of the incident, but he claimed he was not aiming at the dog.
Police recovered two BB guns from MORRIS’ residence.
The case was then reviewed by police and the Assistant States Attorney Caspar who advised probable cause was present and requested the defendant be charged with animal cruelty.
A criminal summons was issued on November 17, 2020, for MORRIS.
His preliminary hearing has been set for January 8, 2021, in District Court.
People who like to use guns should turn them on themselves!
I will send out a few emails to find out the wellbeing of the furbaby and post an update if I get responses.
