Colorado Officer K-9 Jinx killed during gunfire between law enforcement and WILFORD ROBERT DEWEESE

On April 12, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office published a heartbreaking Facebook post to announce the death of Officer K-9 Jinx.
On the late evening of Monday, April 11, Deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office along with Manitou Springs Police Officers responded to a business in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue due to a report of a person menacing others with a firearm.
According to a press release by the Colorado Springs Police, “A short time later, officers and deputies contacted the suspect from that report. During that contact, the suspect fired at least one round at law enforcement personnel. As a result, at least one Manitou Springs Police Officer and at least one El Paso County Sheriff Deputy fired their duty weapon at least one time, striking the suspect. Officers and deputies immediately started life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived, however, the suspect died on the scene.”
El Paso County Sheriff’s Officer K-9 Jinx was shot and killed during this incident.
No other deputies or officers were injured.
The suspect was identified as 67-years-old WILFORD ROBERT DEWEESE, of Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Speaking of DEWEESE, the Colorado Springs Police Department said in a press release that “the cause and manner of death will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.”
This case is actively being investigated by detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Deadly Force Investigative Team.
The involved officers and deputies have been placed on administrative leave per their department policies.
The officers involved were publicly identified as:
- Officer Schuelke with the Manitou Springs Police Department.
- Officer Hoover with the Manitou Springs Police Department.
- Deputy Daniel LeBaron with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
- Deputy Ronnie Hancock with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
A funeral procession was held in Colorado Springs on the morning of Tuesday, April 12, for Officer K-9 Jinx.
It started at 5520 North Nevada Avenue, moved south on Nevada Avenue, turned west on East Vermijo Avenue and concluded at the Sheriff's Office.
On Thursday, April 21, 2022, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the community gathered together at New Life Church on 11205 Voyager Parkway in Colorado Springs to honor the memory and the sacrifice of Officer K-9 Jinx.
At the memorial service, El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder said that Officer K-9 Jinx was born on March 12, 2018. He had joined the Sheriff’s Office in March 2020, as part of the narcotics and apprehension unit when he was only 13 months old.
Sheriff Elder said: “When we lost Jinx, we lost a member of our office. He was one of our own.”
