The Pittsfield Police Department arrested 24-year-old CHRISTOPHER DAVID COLSON JR. (pictured).

The probable cause affidavit filed in Somerset County Unified Court accuses COLSON of sexually assaulting a dog, a 6-year-old Airedale terrier named Sophia.

On the early afternoon of September 18, 2025, Pittsfield Animal Control Officer Russell Craft received a call from Pittsfield Police asking that he go to Hometown Veterinary Care in Fairfield because a veterinarian believed a dog had been sexually assaulted and was paralyzed.

ACO Craft responded to the hospital and learned from the veterinarian that Sophia had been brought in by her guardian, Linda. Linda had returned home that morning to find Sophia in a room where COLSON was staying. According to Linda, Sophia could not walk, could not stand, and her front legs were sprawled out. Linda said that COLSON denied knowing what happened to Sophia.

Sophia was examined and the veterinary report revealed evidence of sexual assault.

The medical prognosis was that Sophia’s complete back legs area paralysis was beyond medical repair and Linda made a decision to have Sophia euthanized.

COLSON was arrested and according to the online records maintained by the Somerset County Jail, he was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and bestiality/cruelty to animals. Bond was set at $5,000.

COLSON appeared in court on September 22, 2025, and he was ordered to be placed in Somerset County Jail with $1,000 cash bail.

COLSON was ordered to undergo a psychiatric exam, to not have contact with Sophia’s guardian and is additionally prohibited from having domesticated animals.

COLSON’s dispositional conference is scheduled for January 12, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

At the time of writing, records show COLSON is still behind bars.
