CHEYENNE LOUISE BALDWIN arrested after three emaciated horses were removed from a property in Putnam County - One of them had to be euthanized

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 29-year-old CHEYENNE LOUISE BALDWIN (pictured).

According to the press release by the sheriff’s office, in late June 2026, a neighbor of BALDWIN contacted her and asked her whether she had a horse for sale.

BALDWIN told her neighbor that she had a horse, an 8-year-old bay mare named Alex, for sale for $1,800 and sent her a photo of Alex.

According to the neighbor, Alex was in poor condition so the neighbor offered to take Alex for free because she needed treatment. BALDWIN declined the offer and the neighbor alerted the sheriff’s office to the situation.

Agriculture Deputy Mullins then contacted BALDWIN who said that Alex was a “hard keeper” and was having difficulty eating.

Deputy Mullins took pictures of Alex and sent a search warrant affidavit to the State Attorney's Office for removal of Alex.

On July 8, 2026, a search warrant was approved and deputies went to BALDWIN’s rural property in Hollister to evaluate and remove BALDWIN’s horses.

Authorities removed three horses from the property, Alex, one named June Bug, and another named Sanji.

The sheriff’s office said all three of them “had some level of emaciation from moderate to severe and they were taken to a horse rescue to receive veterinary care and rehabilitation.”

On July 10, 2026, a veterinarian evaluated Alex, June Bug, and Sanji. According to the sheriff’s office, the veterinary report revealed that they “...needed hoof care by a qualified farrier to correct issues as well as an equine dentist to address their teeth issues. Additionally two of the horses had ‘rain rot’, which is preventable through grooming, keeping the horses dry, using fly spray to prevent insect bites and maintaining health.”

Three days later, on July 13, 2026, the vet was called back to the rescue because “Alex had fallen in distress,” stated the press release. Sadly, the decision was made to euthanize Alex.

A warrant was issued for BALDWIN’s arrest and she was taken into custody on the evening of July 21, 2026. She was charged with three felony counts of cruelty to animals and booked into the Putnam County Jail. Judge Katherine H. Miller set bond at $30,000. At the time of writing records show BALDWIN was released the same evening.

The sheriff’s office advised that June Bug and Sanji “...are continuing to rehabilitate and receive care.” They are expected to make a full recovery.
