~ Update: August 22, 205

The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office tells me the dog was an approximately 2-year-old male. His name was not provided by BIZEK.

I also learned that a necropsy will not be performed on the furvictim and that BIZEK has another dog.

~ Original story:

The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40-year-old BRIAN KEITH BIZEK (pictured).

On July 22, 2025, Animal Control Officer Mayhann contacted the sheriff’s office in reference to an animal welfare complaint.

ACO Mayhann explained that he responded to a residence on 437 Palmetto Drive in Port St. Joe where he sadly found a deceased dog. The officer said the dog was tethered to a metal structure in an unshaded field. His/Her lead was entangled, restricting his/her movement and access to water.

Deputy Cole responded to the scene and made contact with BIZEK who admitted he had instructed his son to tether the dog and failed to check on his/her condition. BIZEK claimed the dog may have been poisoned but was unable to provide evidence to corroborate his claim. Furthermore, according to the affidavit, BIZEK "showed no visible remorse and admitted to leaving the animal unattended in extreme heat."

A witness, whom I will refer to as Ms. B., told the officers that in the morning she saw BIZEK putting the dog outside and despite the dog's distress, BIZEK left the residence. According to Ms. B., the dog was panting heavily before collapsing. She further reported that BIZEK "had exhibited aggressive behavior toward other animals in the past."

The dog's pictures taken by ACO Mayhann, were submitted to Mark Eddins, executive director of American Animal Cruelty Investigation School, who stated: "I reviewed the photos and based on the weather conditions, lack of shade for the animal, and conditions of the body, this is a clear case of the animal dying from heatstroke. The sloughing off the skin is caused by severe dehydration associated with heat stroke. Considering the heat index was 107 degrees, it is unlikely there is any other cause. Dehydrated slough of skin refers to a type of necrotic tissue that accumulates on the surface of a wound, typically appearing as a yellowish or white, stringy substance. It is composed of dead cells, debris, and tissue remnants that have not yet undergone proper breakdown.”

Deputy Cole wrote in his report that BIZEK did not show any responsibility or remorse and accused him of recklessly neglecting the dog's well-being resulting in death.

BIZEK was arrested on July 30, 2025, and charged with one felony count of cruelty to animal causing death, pain, and suffering.

At the time of writing, records show BIZEK is being held at the Gulf County Jail and his next court date is set for September 9, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Devin D. Collier.

The affidavit does not contain the dog’s age, name, breed, or sex.

I took the liberty of naming the furvictim Lake for the tribute image. Should his/her given name be made public, I will rectify it accordingly.
