- Okeechobee County, Florida, USA -
57-year-old BOBBY C. TRAVIS was arrested Tuesday, September 24, by the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office in connection with emaciated horses found in Okeechobee County.
On Sunday, September 22, one mare was rescued by the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation in Palm City.
Rescuers named her ‘Freedom’ right before she lost her precious life, probably due to the ongoing neglect.
The other three were seized by animal care.
CBS12 reports that when a local woman noticed the extremely thin horses, she took pictures and alerted the authorities.
According to ABC 25 WPBF, someone had reported this cruelty six months ago to Animal Care and Control and the Sheriff’s Office, and no one took action.
For this reason, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation in addition to the criminal one.
The supervisor in charge of the unit at the Sheriff’s Office that was supposed to investigate these complaints has resigned.
This is not the first accusation of animal neglect against TRAVIS.
As CBS 12 reports, in 2012 the accused was cited and fined for failing to provide horses in his care with clean living conditions.
In 2013, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control euthanized an elderly horse starving to death, and another horse had to be taken away from a pasture TRAVIS rented in Jupiter Farms.
TRAVIS now faces one felony count of animal cruelty and two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.
His bond will be set after his first court appearance.
