- Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA -
A female baby opossum, less than a year old, has been brutally beaten by some cruel golfers with their clubs leaving her blind, her tiny jaw broken and a large gash on her throat.
The poor creature was found Tuesday, January 7.
This innocent soul now named Scarlett, is in the care of the nonprofit Wildlife Rehab of Greenville.
They believe that the gruesome incident took place on Hilton Head Island.
The wild center has no authority to investigate the case, but they have filed a report with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and they have also contacted the golf course.
The nonprofit wrote in their Facebook post on January 9,: “Update: Scarlett is in the care of a trained rehabber at this time and is receiving excellent medical care. We expect a lengthy recovery period. We have reported the event with DNR and have contacted the golf course. We have no authority as wildlife rehabbers. We trust DNR to investigate further.”
They also wrote: “She’s only 2 pounds and still has baby teeth. It’s hard to imagine why she was attacked so viciously. The vet is helping her and feels she can recover.”
A recent update states that: “Scarlett is doing as well as expected. She’s still getting fluids and getting nourishment by careful drips on the tongue.”
David Lucas, a spokesperson for SCDNR (South Carolina Department of Natural Resources) told CNN affiliate WJCL that anyone with information regarding the attack is encouraged to reach out to the SCDNR.
Anyone with information regarding this incident please come forward and give Scarlett a voice. Contact the toll-free Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-922-5431 or via text message using the SCDNR TIPS mobile app. Thank you!
