18-year-old AUSTIN S. ILARDO (pictured below), is behind bars after attacking two innocent dogs killing one of them.
ILARDO was arrested Tuesday night, February 4, on one felony count of animal cruelty in the fatal attack on the family’s Toy Poodle, and on an additional misdemeanor count of animal cruelty for striking a Boston Terrier.
Just after 10:00 p.m. Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to his home on Lehigh Drive where he lived with his father and stepmom.
The Sheriff’s Office received a report that ILARDO had gone on a rampage in the house.
The Sheriff’s Office wrote in their Facebook post that the accused told deputies “he was angry with his parents and took his anger out on the Boston terrier, striking her several times with his hands and his shoe. He said he realized what he was doing was wrong, and he put the dog in a bathroom so he wouldn’t hurt her any more.”
According to the Sheriff’s Office ILARDO called his father to tell him what he did and became angry again.
This led him to break items in the house and ultimately, he struck and killed the Poodle with a wooden dowel.
The Boston Terrier was found in the bathroom without any visible or apparent injuries but the family indicated they may seek a veterinary examination.
The lifeless Poodle was also recovered as well as the 15-inch dowel used by ILARDO in the attack.
ILARDO’s bond was set at $6,000 and remained in the Volusia County Branch Jail.
Reporter Claire Metz with WESH 2 said that per court order and the father’s wishes the son cannot return home.
