35-year-old ALEXIS NICOLE RITTER (pictured below), was arrested on Thursday, October 8, after police found a dog living in deplorable conditions at her apartment on 2550 42nd Street in Vero Beach.
TC Palm. reports that officers went to RITTER’s apartment after receiving a call from a woman who requested a welfare check on a dog.
At first, RITTER lied and told officers that her dog had died.
Then, she gave another version and said her dog had run away.
As the questioning continued, she finally went into the room to get her victim.
Responding deputy Eric Brashears told TC Palm.: “I heard the dog let out multiple 'yelps' before coming out of the room under its own power.”
The furbaby, a medium-sized brown and white, male Hound mix, was locked in a room that police described as hot with no ventilation.
Inside the room there was a small dog crate. There was no food or water.
The poor soul had open and bleeding wounds on his torso and was covered in waste.
The marks suggested a vest was worn previously that was too small.
Deputy Brashears said: “The vest had grown into the skin of the upper torso of the dog and went all the way around from the back to the chest.”
The female told the deputy that when she got the dog in August, he was wearing a vest that was too small and she cut it off with a razor blade.
However, Vero News reports that the woman who called the police, is a relative who claimed she gave the dog to RITTER in February.
Animal control officers then took the furbaby to be medically treated.
ALEXIS NICOLE RITTER was booked into the Indian River County Jail and charged with felony cruelty to animals.
Bond was set at $10,000.
She is scheduled to appear in court on November 20.
That gives us enough time to find out who the judge will be and write to them to make sure this criminal does not get away with a slap on the wrist.
